Financial Services Authority (FSA)
The Financial Services Authority is an independent, non-governmental body given statutory powers by the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (and other legislation). The FSA regulates all investment business undertaken in the UK.

Fiscal Year
The relevant period for assessing total income and capital gains for liability to tax. Runs from 6 April in one year to 5 April in the following year.

Fit & Proper
Under Financial Services Act everyone conducting investment business must be a 'fit and proper person'. The Act does not define the term, a function which is left to the regulators such as the FSA.

Fixed Charge
A bond holder’s secured charge over specific assets of the issuing group or company.

Fixed Income Investment
An investment that pays a pre-determined, regular rate of interest or dividend until it matures.

Floating Charge
Charge over a class of assets, such as the stock in trade of the business.

Floating Rate Note (FRN)
Bond where each interest payment is made at the current market levels, often by reference to LIBOR.

The process of bringing a company’s shares to the market for the first time.

Forex
Another name for foreign exchange market and foreign exchange trading.

Friendly Society
Societies formed initially to benefit members in return for regular contributions against sickness, poverty and bereavement. Now generally provide various insurance covers (life, medical etc) as well as savings vehicles.

FTSE 100 Index
Main UK share index based on 100 leading shares, based on market capitalisation.

FTSE 250 index
UK share index based on the 250 shares immediately below the top 100.

FTSE All Share Index
The Financial Times Actuaries measure of the leading 850 companies listed on the UK Stock Market.

Fund Manager
Individuals or specialist companies responsible for investing the assets of a fund in such a way as to maximise its value. They do this by following a strategy to buy and sell equities and other financial instruments.

Fungible
Capable of being delivered in lieu of another security. It describes a further issue of stock which is indistinguishable from the existing stock. A new tranche of an existing issue may not become fungible until the first coupon date. Also applies to Traded Options traded as either American (exercisable at anytime) or European style (exercisable only on final expiry day.)

Future
An agreement to buy or sell a fixed quantity of a commodity, currency or security for delivery at a future date at a predetermined price.
